Informatie over LFA,
dolfijnen en walvissen

Onderstaande informatie dient ter ondersteuning aan de wereldwijde initiatieven ter voorkoming van de invoering van een nieuwe sonar-techniek die de Amerikaanse marine wil inzetten voor defensie doeleinden. Het gaat om het meest krachtige onderwater-geluid dat ooit is geproduceerd. Vergelijkbaar met het oorverdovende kabaal van de start van een Saturn V raket. Deze sonar met de naam LFA (Low Frequency Active) verstoort het gehoor en daarmee ook het oriëntatievermogen van dolfijnen en walvissen. Hierdoor is het aannemelijk dat het aantal gestrande walvissen en dolfijnen verder zal toenemen. Onderstaand (Engelstalig) bericht bericht over recente strandingen van diverse zeedieren.

Last week the US Navy got permission to go ahead with tests for using low frequency sonar in our oceans.

*On Saturday 60 false killer whales beached themselves off Australia.
*Yesterday it was reported that hundreds of Giant squid had beached
themselves along the Californian coastline along with unusual numbers of
(harmless)leopard sharks coming in close to shore disorientated.
*Twelve manatees have also been reported to have died on the Florida coast.
*Today it is reported that another 60 pilot whales have beached themselves off Cape Cod.

All of this within a week of the Navy's go ahead to use this low frequency
sonar, Coincidence? I think not.
The sonar is equivalent in decibels to us standing next to a rocket being
launched. It causes brain hemorrhaging & disorientation to cetaceans.
There are innumerable accounts of how dolphins and whales have helped us in life threatening situations...Now it is time for us to help them.
What can we do?

Voorbeeldbrief Subject: Don't deploy LFA sonar!

Dear Secretary England,

I am deeply concerned about the U.S. Navy's plan to deploy Low
Frequency Active sonar, a dangerous new system, in as much as 80
percent of the planet's oceans. LFA poses an unacceptable risk to
marine mammals and other ocean life around the world.

At close range, the noise that LFA generates is millions of times
more intense than the Navy considers safe for human divers and
billions of times more intense than levels known to disturb large
whales. And because that noise spreads so far, its environmental
impact could be enormous. It is expected to cause hearing loss and
disruptions in communication and breeding in animals whose lives are
governed by sound. And, in the worst case, it could result in
strandings, serious injury, or death, as in the Bahamas, where many
whales stranded themselves and died after a Navy sonar exercise.

Yet the Navy is seeking to deploy LFA without addressing some of the
system's worst potential impacts, such as the internal injury that is
believed to have occurred in the Bahamas whales; without adequately
examining the connection between active sonar and mass strandings;
and without evaluating the system's long-term, cumulative effects on
populations of whales, dolphins, porpoises, sea turtles, and other
marine animals.

To deploy LFA under these conditions would be unconscionable. In
light of the substantial risks it presents to marine species and
habitat around the world, I strongly urge you to halt deployment of
the system until the long-term safety of ocean wildlife can be
assured.
